A Buddhist view of Relationships
by Eddy Canfor-Dumas

Why him? Why her?
In fact, as we chant and study the life-philosophy of Nichiren Daishonin, we can go even deeper into ourselves and begin to see and understand the pattern of our attraction to certain people. For, as Nichiren Daishonin teaches, two people who have chosen to live in a close relationship fit each other perfectly, in all their strengths and weaknesses. Describing the relationship of husband and wife in thirteenth century Japan, he says:

When a husband is happy, his wife will be fulfilled. If a husband is a thief, his wife will become one, too. This is not a matter of this life alone. A man and wife are as close as a body and shadow, flowers and fruit, or roots and leaves, in every existence of life (Major writings, Vol.1, p.146).
This observation is based on the Buddhist principle of the Ten Worlds. Buddhism teaches that all people share ten basic life conditions – Hell, Hunger, Animality, Anger, Tranquility, Rapture, Learning, Realization, Boddhisatva and Buddhahood, all of which have certain characteristics.

Hell is the world of suffering; Hunger is the world of insatiable desire; Animality is the world of the instinct. Anger is dominated by the ego, Tranquillity (Humanity) by calmness, Rapture by momentary pleasure, Learning is characterized by the desire to learn from the teachings of others, Realization by the desire to improve oneself through one’s own efforts, and Boddhisatva by the exercise of compassion. Buddhahood, which is revealed through chanting Nam myoho renge kyo, acts as a kind of positive filter which brings out all of the beneficial, value-creating aspects of the other nine worlds.

Everyone tends to live predominantly in one or two of these life conditions, which, although they are displayed according to the personality of each individual, retain their basic characteristics. Thus, one person might be brash and boastful and another quietly superior, but both are exhibiting aspects of the world of Anger, the ego.

The important thing about this, as far as relationships go, is that we tend to be attracted to those people who share the same basic life condition as ourselves.

A person in the grip of Animality, for instance, will take every opportunity to indulge in instinctive pleasures – sex, food, drink, sleep – usually with little thought for the consequences of his actions. He will tend to be attracted to someone who is also in the grip of Animality, even though the object of his attentions might not exhibit all the same aspects of the life condition. For instance, both might share an appetite for sex and alcohol, but one might consistently defer to the wishes of the other in all other matters – as Nichiren Daishonin says of Animality, ‘It is the nature of beasts to threaten the weak and fear the strong’ (Major Writings, Vol.1, p.34).

Exactly how the Ten Worlds operate in individuals can be extremely subtle, and there is no space here to analyse all their various nuances. And they are by no means all bad. Each of the Ten Worlds has both negative and positive aspects (except Buddhahood, which is wholly positive), so if we are fortunate enough to be dominated by, say, the positive aspects of the world of Tranquility (or Humanity) – clear, reasoned judgement – our chances of forging a successful relationship will be much higher than if we are in the clutches of Hell, whether or not we chant Nam myoho renge kyo.

Even so, as we chant about our present and past relationships, we begin to identify which of the Ten Worlds have been dominant in them. Almost invariably, we see that we have been attracted to the same type of person, ‘chosen’ by our own dominant life state.

This pattern Buddhism calls our ‘karma’, habitual behaviour which we are bound to repeat. Take the couple described above. If the man begins to despise his partner’s weakness and continual deference – one of the very things that attracts him in the first place – he might eventually end the relationship. Being dominated by Animality, however, he is only attracted to those who share characteristics similar to the person he has just left. They might appear in a different form –this time, for instance, he might play the subservient role – but essentially he will find himself in the same kind of relationship.

Breaking the pattern.
It is to break out of the pattern imposed on us by our karma that we chant. As we do so and reflect on our actions, we begin to see our motives more clearly. And after a time (it varies from person to person), if we conclude that our attitude is based on the negative aspects of one of the Ten Worlds – especially the ‘lower worlds’ of Hell, Hunger, Animality, Anger, Tranquility or Rapture – we determine to challenge and change it, for the happiness of both ourselves and our partner (present or future).

At the same time we struggle to base our relationships increasingly on the world of Buddhahood, with its deep respect for the inherent dignity of life and for the fundamental equality of all people. For ultimately, Buddhism teaches, it is a relationship based on shared goals, respect and equality that stands more chance of enduring and growing than one based on passion, romance or unrealistic expectations of our partner’s ability to make us happy. As Nichiren Daishonin states:

Explain all this to your wife, and work together like the sun and the moon, a pair of eyes, or the two winds of a bird. With the sun and the moon, how can you fall into the path of darkness? With a pair of eyes, how can you fail to behold the faces of Shakyamuni, Taho and all the other Buddhas of the universe? With a pair of wings, you will surely be able to fly in an instant to the Buddha land of eternal happiness (Major Writings, Vol.2, p.231).

What does this mean in practical terms? First, if we are not involved with anyone at present but wish to be, it means making a strong determination to meet the right person for our happiness – which also means the right person for kosen-rufu – and then, effectively, forgetting about it. Lodged deep in our lives, the desire to meet the right person, coupled with a strong daily practice, will eventually draw that person to us when the time is right.

In the meantime, instead of being obsessed with having ‘a relationship’ and feeling sorry for ourselves that we are alone, we can concentrate on creating value in our society and growing as strong and independent individuals – who are, anyway, generally more attractive to others than those who are always desperately seeking someone.

‘The right partner for kosen-rufu’ does not mean, however, that there will only ever be one person ‘out there’ with whom we can possibly build a happy relationship, whom we somehow hunt out with our chanting; neither does it mean that he or she should necessarily be a Buddhist.

There may, in fact, be more than one person with whom we forge successful, creative relationships on the path of our human revolution towards finding our partner for life. They may or may not be Buddhists (although this would be hard with someone vehemently and consistently opposed to our practice). And even if our partner never chants, if we do our utmost to respect and support him or her in the fulfillment of his or her unique purpose in this life, he or she will respect and support us in turn, and help us fulfil our unique purpose, too.

In this context, chanting is a means of developing sufficient good fortune, through our thoughts, words and deeds based on Buddhahood, to be in the right position to meet the right person at the right time. Chanting also helps us develop enough wisdom to recognize the potential that exists in that other person (and any existing relationship we might have), and then to decide whether to act or not.

So, secondly, once we meet someone to whom we are attracted, we should chant seriously before we become romantically (or sexually) involved with him or her. We need the wisdom (and courage) of our Buddhahood to look clearly and honestly at the nature of our attraction. And if our wisdom counsels against involvement, we must listen to it – or face the inevitable consequences. Our karma to be drawn to a certain type of person may be very strong, but if we have suffered from it in the past, it is only by not succumbing to it now that we can hope to change our pattern of unhappy relationships.

What’s gone wrong?
Once in a relationship, then, it follows that we must chant seriously about all of the problems that it will inevitably throw up, however minor they might seem at the time – for, in Everett’s words, ‘Tall oaks from little acorns grow.’

Buddhism teaches that however passionate two people are at the start of their relationship, over the course of time the intensity of that feeling will fade and change. This is because romantic love is all too often a manifestation of the world of Rapture, which is, by definition, short-lived. The passing of the rapturous phase does not necessarily mean that the couple will have stopped loving each other – although some people think this is what has happened and can get very worried – but that other aspects of the Ten Worlds have come to the fore.

For example, through the rose-tinted spectacles of Rapture, Ms A is beguiled by Mr B’s easy-going charm. But as Rapture fades, as it must, she’s increasingly irritated by what she now sees as his laziness and refusal ever to take a stand on anything. In other words, the Tranquility that attracted her has begun to repel her.

spring clean

For the sake of Chinese New Year, I did what people normally do - tidy up my room.

This time, it means something to me. It is a new start. One year has gone, after I came back from New Zealand. I packed the things that I've brought back, these things are already been all over the place in my room for a year. Some were for display and they are still as display. Some are for use but I didn't finish up, as I didn't want to. Mainly are things that I don't need to use them here, and I am still seeing them everyday, such as? a half inch thick trench coat.

I admit that, it was because I didn't want to leave my memories behind. They were there to remind myself, to make myself missing what was there so much. In fact, there is nothing solid that I am really missing, it was just ended with some unwillingness plus some unhappy memories.

Hence, I resolute to clean up what I need to clean up, throw away what was supposed to throw, as a start of a new phase of life, use up what I was suppose to use up a year ago.

Winter clothes, jackets, knitted sweater, trench coat, scarfs, 2 pairs of boots, weighted 13kg.

Things that were always there for me, my beloved scented pillow and duvet.

I knew that I couldn't have been through those days without some of my friends that were there with me. Friends that I still see them as friends when some of them might not want me to be their friend or not willing to mention anything about me. I learned that what matters is to do the best for now, and I will not look back.

Heartily, I wish one day in the future, we will be friends again.

bye~!

self search

Physically exhaustion is not an excuse for looking lifeless. Exposed under the sun every weekend for the intensive training, someone exclaimed that "You look so tanned!" "You look healthy!", some said "why are you so dark?" I answered in my heart, "yea...... fair does not relate to me anymore" "I never thought of using WHITENING LOTION in this life time, I thought I didn't need that, because people have been complaining that I was too pale." Getting closer to my double missions, and I am loosing my aim and happiness. I am not sure why is this happened.

Apparently, I felt I am more energized after yoga class, after my favorite teacher - Indra's class. She taught us not just postures but about how to look at things differently, in another point of view or angle, while we are doing some yoga postures, things are simply different for instance, looking at our toes up side down. How to appreciate people and other practitioners in the class, as yoga is not just about personal but the positive energy surrounding us, and be thankful to them. As well as how can our mind control our body, be strong in mind yet humble without having the attitude to compete with others, listen to our body and being observant.

Oh, most of the time, she chants some peaceful melody at the end of the class. Her routine ending message: May peace always be with you. May the class benefits you in your daily life and have a nice day.

:(

This morning I almost cried... You know me, I mean, tears gleaming in the eyes because of that 12 years old boy, 831 Malaysia Independence Day baby, said that he wants to become an inventor when he grow up. To invent a car that can be controlled with autopilot, so that people who drink and drive will not cause any accidents. ( such a great reason, meaningful sense of purpose ) Will that be another reason for people to practice drink and drive as there is an autopilot car will take them home then beating up wife and kids?

13. Friday

I don't really believe, today is not a very good day for me. When I knew that I had to replace a new logicboard for my powerbook, which cost RM3400. one side of my earphones is not working anymore, for no reason, it was still working 4 hours ago.

a friday like this, should camouflage at work. that's good about sitting at the green wall area and wearing green.

And this is not a joke. My boyfriend said he wants to buy a book for me. (sounded nice and sweet). He said. The book title is "How to be a good girlfriend".
ok.
wtFRUIT?
I said, so I want to buy a book for you. "How to break up with your girlfriend" - he actually doesn't need that, he got the way?!

{ Intuitive Interpreter }

I've spent some time on doing an IQ test this early morning, I have scored 105 marks, here is the report that i have :
People who are Intuitive Interpreters are highly conceptual thinkers. Rather than focusing on facts and figures, they look at the big picture. They are less inclined to need to walk through something step-by-step to understand the logic behind it. This also lets them make connections between something they learned three weeks ago and something they are learning today. While other people need those types of connections pointed out for them, Intuitive Interpreters just naturally make them

{ welcome back, myself }

It has been almost a month, I've left this blog. How much that I wish I could be able write my blog these days.

Just got connection back in the house, it is a moment that I should celebrate, all the songs that I am playing and all the lights that I've switched on in the room are for this celebration, like how were the lights burned in Miyako celebrated Sayuri's achievement in Memoirs of a Geisha.

{ it's mine I }

minenice
Never thought of this could happen to me. I got an unexpected gift for myself on this christmas day. This poor foot, got one twist on the ankle when I was 12. A tyre of Perdana, an exclusive local car rolled over on the same part underneath this bandage 4 years ago. I sprained my foot awfully right before I was preparing for being up on the stage, made me got to shout our motto squatting down where my all the hands of my sisters are on top of my head, I couldn't make myself stand up at that moment, very unforgetable. No worries, it didn't put out the drive in me to present my gratitude to my family and friends who were waiting in the audience seats.

Wish my own right foot all the best in life, be strong, happy and healthy always.

{ 10 days to go }

look2006 is shouting. We are about to leave this time flying year. It's SUPER fast for me, because there were too many things happened throughout this year. too many too many.

Time for us to flash back with what we have done in the past 355 days. I've planned to write a victory report, but somehow I just feel I am not there yet. This year has been giving me too much experiences, very rich in the sum of experiences, but not that much of victorious moments. Nevertheless, they were all meaningful and memorable. I will complete my victory report in 2006. Hereby, I cross my fingers ;) cheers.

{ all we have for christmas }

its christmas
this is what we haveThe earth is celebrating this day. Coal burning, moving water to the energy generators for lights, other than lights, lights as well for christmas decoration. What do we have for christmas in malaysia that is just next to the equator?
Falling snow, snow man, chimney, santa claus, carol, turkey, sleigh, chocolates from neighbours? a white christmas in the area that experience quickest rates of sunrise and sunset in the world? snow that won't melt, because they are cotton ball, snow man that made by styrofoam, factories chimneys with poisonous chemical effects smokes.

It's holiday. It's a worldwide celebration, some people celebrate becuase the nations are celebrating. Including me may be. People told us that we have been celebrating all these big days are for the typical annual largest economics stimulus. It's true, but we are happy and it's almost the only best reason plus best timing for us to play with the seldom-contact or busy-working friends.

All we have for christmas is the never ending sunshine and rain, man made shinny neon lights, blinking fairy lights, tinsel balls, candy cane, stockings, alcohol, fast and loud music, presents that we wished for or didn't wish for, old friends and new friends, and what else? night life, parties and clubbing sessions all over the place. It's a tropicana fruit punch christmas here.

merry christmas, however it is, please don't drunk driving.

{ why happy meal ? }

must be happySomeone feel truly happy when they got back what they have missed and ignore how expensive is the cost, or feel so grateful to have a meal. Some people still complain about their life when they have too much money to spend. HAppy can be so simple at the same time it is so hard to get a true happiness from the bottom of heart, yet it can be lost easily.

Do you know why we need to be happy? What is happy? Why do we need to pretend to be happy when we are actually not happy? Why we could feel so bad when we can have a happy day but in the end of the day, some little problems sudden happened then cause us drop into hell. Sad, worried, pessimistic, disappointed, hopeless.

{ abuse attitude }

beautifularrogant
The word "attitude" is being too frequently used in our daily life.

The biggest problem of this word is how many people know about attitude. Attitude problem is a very big issue, there is no defination for attitude problem I believe. Who is going to judge who has no attitude problem at all? Who is willing to be judged? Everyone will never can be everyone's cup of tea.

Everyone has got attitude in a way. So, who are they, who has attitude problem? What's wrong with the problem, when some problems don't seemed to be some other people's problem? got it ? no ? Look, a peacock, when he spread his most notable extravagant tail, you will see him arrogant or beautiful? While it is indeed displaying a part of courtship and result of sexual selection. I do confuse about attitude. Not that I want to make things complicated, are humans just a great dilemma?

got attitude? tell me.

{ lovely lazy morning }

this lifeLife is so beautiful when I am having my favorite chocolate bread, rainy weather outside, in the office though.

It is all fine, because I have iTunes, the best juke box to me, turning the equalizer setting to jazz mode with my beloved selection of sluggish smooth jazz (*must be harmonized with saxophone*) in the playlist.

I think I have all elements for world peace in this morning, and I feel the earth is spinning at my very own pace. If there is a cup of classic irish coffee will make perfect.

{ nothing ever bad }

70 years Pocket Penguin, MARIAN KEYES "Nothing bad ever happens in Tiffany's".
I bought it about 2 months ago. Obviously, you know why did I bought it, and it was under a quite bizzare situation, that is when I was hanging out and I suddenly felt "I must buy something today, a book!". Then, I got in Kinokuniya and pondered over which book is "crunchy" for me, like snacks, a little but taste the excitement shortly then end. When I was busy flipping through all the books on the Pocket Penguin rack, this book appeared right under my nose, and you know I am buying it.

For a moment, I thought it was teasing me. In the book, it describes how panic Tiffany can be, and she's just love chocolate. First story in the book, in short, she found that her passport has gone, 3 days before the flight to her christmas holidays, torn her room apart, attacked the entire flat. It was not found and like ants in the boiling water. see? It's me. Here comes the second story, she investigates jetlag cures from natural heal to chemical solutions, in the end, guess what? told to select an over-priced, super-sized M&M and eat to sleep. me again. you too?

!!!Everything is in my head. here and there. east and west. where? why? what? HOW? I don't know. I have too much information and opinion. Is this the right time that I need to stay away from everything and just go on with my own way? Just decide from my own instinct?
